Snapshots of My Year

I really do wonder at times where the year disappears to.
Before it gets to far into the distance I just want to show you the album covers i finally completed for my Snapshots of my year challenge.
its all relatively simple and i have used the Kaisercraft recipe covers as my base as i know that clear page protectors fit into them as that is what i have been using to store the printouts of my weekly collages of the photos i have been taking each day. and yes believe it or not i have been keeping relatively up to date but only get to sort out the photos every week or so.
Here are a couple of my favourites from last week.

Project 365 - A Photo A Day

If any of you are wondering what ever happened to The Snapshot of my year - Project 365 - Well I finally gotten back to it after a week I would rather forget. As much as I really wanted to keep this up to date, unfortuantely due to other committments something had to give. Anyway Im back on board, sorry for the delays and in the next couple of weeks should be back up to speed. So continue taking your photos and as you can see below, don't stress if you forget a day as you will still be getting a good glimpse of your year - give or take a couple of photos if that may be the case.

As for the random prize from the comments left when I first posted up regarding this project. (My girls have drawn out a name and the winner is Simmone with the following comments.
Congratulations Simone and if you can contact me on my email - melissa.k@kaisercraft.com.au I will send you out the rubons and clear stamps that were in the photo. Thanks for leaving your comments.

Hey, I am planning on joining in on this too. Sounds great. Don't know if I will do a photo a day, was thinking more about just covering major events that happen each month.Have already purchased a folder. Yay.Thanks Melissa.

If you haven't downloaded Picasa 3 already - Im thinking its time you did. For a free downloadable program this is great. You can do so much with it and its so easy. Once I finally decided on what photos I wanted to include for January, I then opened them up in Picasa. I tried to divide them up evenly and then I created collages from them. To do this you need to select 6 - 7 photos and then select the Collage button at the bottom of your screen - it automatically does the rest for you. You can change the style of collage in the "Settings" area on the left of your screen. I formatted my pages to A4 knowing that I am going to be keeping them in the A4 page protectors.
The 4 photos below now become my summary of January. Once these are printed out of A4 photo paper you can just add a few date stamps and journal boxes or you can either cut them along the lines and scrap a few of them if you would like to add more detail. If scrapping is not really your thing as you can see you can just store them away as is in the A4 page protectors .

As you can see you can get a quick glimpse of your year already just by looking at these.
If you store your photos in a separate special directory on your computer especially for this project - (mine are in one called 365 photos and then sub directories (with each month of the year) under that) - You can create a quick Contact sheet using this program that gives you an information Header without having to change anything. It really is so easy.
I am hoping this gives you enough to go on with for a few days whilst I put some finishing touches to some of the layouts mentioned. Examples of these to be posted up shortly.

Snapshots of My Year - (Project 365)

  1. Before I go on just to get an idea of who is intested, if you would like to participate in this project (pop your name and email addy into the comments below with your name so I can also email you any pdf's etc that I will be designing along the way to help you out with this over the year). If you have any queries you can email me on davmelk@dodo.com.au and ask away. When I return I will randomly be drawing a name and they will get a set of the Kaiser products shown in the picture below (sorry only Australian residents)

I really want to make this as easy as possible for you and encourage you to use up things you have on hand but I will be showing you a picture and list the products that I use myself just in case there are some of you who want to go out to your LSS and spend up. Please bear in mind though some of the pieces of paper I may use come from my stash and who knows how old some of it is.

Now for those of you who know me well - I love the color green - so this will be a recurring theme in my examples.... Im sorry but feel free to choose a color that suits your personality or one you really like.

STEP 1: CREATE YOUR ACETATE MONTHLY TAB DIVIDERS
Ok I have had a chance to sit down and do a few things to get you guys started whilst away.

The above materials I have used are :
Kaisercraft "Spiro" - from Spirograph range
CS712 - Distressed Alphabet
CS714 Squiggle Alphabet
SB539 Fancy Border Rubons
SB546 Clocks Rubons
McGills Tab Punch
Acetate

1. Now from these I have used the two font types in Acrylic Stamps and stamped the name of the month onto a piece of white printer paper (e.g Reflex) and then photographed this onto Acetate.
Why haven't I just stamped directly onto Acetate? - Good question. If you are confident that you won't muck it up - you can - I just weren't, so I thought I would rather waste a piece of paper than a piece of acetate. (if anyone knows where to buy acetate cheap, please tell me.....) For those of you who don't have these clear stamps (use whatever you do OR you could just do this up on your computer using some of the cool fonts there are available and print it out - please don't feel you have to go out and spend. (Kaisercraft won't mind if you do though.....lol these are really great stamps to have though)

TIP: When feeding acetate through your printer - PLEASE make sure you change the settings to transparency. Trust me your employees won't be happy when you jam up the printer....this is of course if you are printing this out at work...now who would do that?

2. From a chosen piece of printed paper (I have naturally used the green side of the spirograph paper) and cut a 2inch strip.
Fold this in half but before adhereing, run a piece of sticky tape down one of the inside sides. This is to strenghen the strip. There is nothing worse than having a page rip out of your binder rings of your album. Once you have stuck the sticky tape down, adhere it to the left side of your acetate, overlapping the edge by only as much as required. I used Pritt glue to do this as I know it is strong enough to hold onto the acetate.

3. Choose a rubon border of your choice and position down the strip.

4. If you are using a A4 ring binder - punch holes in this to fit.
If you are waiting for the one I am going to use - set this aside for now and start the other 11 months.

5. With the tab punch - punch out this shape and adhere it to the top right hand side of the acetate. If you don't have a punch you can just design one of your own or trace around a die cut that you may have in your stash. Write or rub on the word January.

Now there you go - that was all rather easy wasn't it. You have numero uno of your months for the year. Whilst I am away for the next two weeks feel free to go ahead and do one each month of the year. Just choose colors that coordinate with each other. Make sure you like them as they will become your theme for the rest of the year. If you want to have a mixture - go right ahead.

Hope you enjoy and have fun and I will be back to show you what to do with your first months stash of photographs.

If you haven't already download yourself a copy of Picasso 3 for creating cool mosaics of your photos - this is what I use in some of my previous posts and is a great way to show a week at a time - even better we can get them printed to size on a A4 piece of paper for our albums.

Project 365 - A Photo A Day

Ok girls for our take on this Project 365 the following are things that you may want to get your hands on before I post up any pics of what I have been up to.Unfortunately for myself and many others if you have been to Creating Keepsakes and Becky Higgins blog there was hot fantastic full kit available to do this project but it sold out within a very short time (yes i was very disappointed) before realising that it is all based on taking our own photos and keeping track of them sooooooo.... therefore we are still going to be able to create one of these projects but you will be designing it - it will be an original.

- A4 Album for Folder (ringed preferably) - as mentioned previously I am going to be using an ablum covers that will be released next month so if you can be patient and wait you will be able to purchase these, otherwise anything that fits A4 pages and pockets into will do the job. I want to make this as easy as possible for you.

- 12 Acetate pages (one for each month cover) - You will be designing you own.... but I will show you an example so don't stress. As mentioned before I am going to try and encourage you to use up some of your stash.

- A4 Clear Pocket pages (these are to put any layouts you create in) and also to keep all those extra bits of memorabiia to hang onto throughout the year and can't bear the thought to throwing away.

- McGills Tab Punch (Now you may not have one of these and don't stress if you don't) I will scan the shape and make it into a pdf so you can trace around and cut out. These punches are not cheap but they are definately a fantastic investment if you can get your hands on one. Here is a photo of one and I know The Scrapbook Establishment have them in stock at present but just check out your nearest LSS. - Hole puncher or Crop- O- Dile

- Date Stamp and/or Days of the week stamps

- Stazon and various of your favourite acrylic stamps - woo hoo - yes I am finally going to use some of the ones in my stash

- Use of a photocopier if your printer doesn't print directly onto Acetate.

- Sewing machine.... (OK -its to make some pockets in the acetate.... hmmmm)

This may all sound like a bit of mumbo jumbo - but the acetate are for the dividers for each month. There are two ways you can do these. You can either stamp your monthly design onto a plain sheet of white paper and run it through the printer to get it onto acetate
OR
stamp it using Stazon directly onto acetate. Whichever you feel more comfortable doing is OK. The plain piece of paper way is more forgiving.

Stay tuned as I will start one of my dividers today and post it up. You can then get going on designing your own 12 dividers - one for each month... Ok I knew that you knew that but I just was checking you were with me

Now I am starting to get excited and want to get this done..... Am thinking I will also do one for 2008 at the same time and make it the YEAR it WAS...... I have so many bits and pieces floating around from last year its not funny.

Main thing to remember is to keep taking a photo everyday of moments or something that catches your eye.... Keep hold of things that are a memento of good times. e.g. went to the pictures last night with my hubby (yes we had a child free night...woohooo) - so have still got the ticket stubs...... Pop all these into one of those clear pockets for now (make sure all your bits and pieces are dated)...

Project 365 - A Photo A Day

Ok here we go. Here are two projects that we can do over the coming year. Take your pick or do both - there will be spot prizes drawn over the year for both and separate galleries also.

Snapshots of my Year
Ok the concept is not new - actually it is everywhere and at the moment if you blog stalk you will see some type of this project on many scrappers sites so I am not going to pretend this is my idea as it is most definately not......seriously who would think to take a photo a day.... who actually stops at one anyway... Check out the original Project 365 which started in 2004 here

Why am I jumping on the bandwagon. We received a request about having a kit available to do for this project - the Becky Higgins one sold out so quickly - so I thought why not design one using our Kaiser products. Basically though I really would like this is something that you do not then have to buy in a kit form(more info on this later ) but to be able to create using all the stuff you have at home. If you then need a little extra go and get it and hopefully I will be able to help you use up some of your stash at home too.

The album I plan on using isn't to be released until Feb so you will have to wait to see this BUT..... you can get out those cameras and start snapping, even if you only do take one photo a day by Feb you will soon have your January photos ready to work with, which is when I will put up the first month for you. If you must start scrapping a few favorites along the way the only clue I am giving you for now is keep your background cardstock to A4 size and it will all fit. Now as I will be going to CHA I won't get my example up until after 5th Feb but keep taking photos. I will start a new gallery for people taking part so you can all see and each month I will be drawing prizes for people who have sent in photos of their months examples and left comments. These will most likely be the BTP new releases for the month. Anyway if you are interested let me know or if you have any ideas or suggestions to help and together we can get started.
Here's a glimpse of my year so far

Notice the ribbon reels they took me two nights to roll from the disgusting tangled mess they were in.

Glimpse of Me (or my year)

This project here is an alternative to the one above or in addition to. Again there will be random spot prizes for participants but this one is based on the example in the latest workshop magazine. Whether you want to record something that happened each month in a little album or just your favourite things that give us a glimpse of you such as favourite food, books, dreams or friends. This is a perfect project to showcase some of your favourite photographs. For this you will need to get the new Beyond the Page products just released. The bookshelf (SB2028) and the mini books (three in each pack) - (SB2027). I will post up instructions on how to create these little albums but you will also be able to find them in the latest workshop magazine. Choose your favourite paper range and you can create your own little bookshelf to suit your own tastes and add your little albums after you have chosen your favorite photos for each month.
